Update on My Mom
Months ago, I wrote about my mom and her battle with cancer. I know that many of you have read it, as it’s the most-read post on my blog!
This morning, my mom woke up and was fine, but 30 minutes later was unable to walk because her equilibrium was so off. My dad and brother Jake took her to the ER, and a CT scan was done. It revealed a tumor about the size of a quarter on the back of her brain, as well as some bleeding around the tumor (due to a blood thinner she has to take to keep stents open). These are causing the equilibrium problems, which currently is causing the right side of her body to sway, and some real difficulty staying awake.
An MRI has also been done, and her primary oncology doctor should be by tonight to see her in the hospital and discuss in detail what’s going on and what we can expect. We do know that they are planning to do radiation, starting tomorrow, to hopefully shrink the tumor and allow her to regain her balance. Not sure how long she will have to be hospitalized.
This is all so hard to believe, because we just saw her yesterday; she was visiting my sister and even helped with a little bit of yardwork, and then she and Dad came over to watch Luke’s first baseball game. She was tired, but was up walking around like normal. Cancer bites.
I have to share this little story. Today as I was getting this news from Jake, the boys had just sat down to eat their lunch. They know to pray before eating, but it usually takes a little prompting from me to get them started. I looked over at them, and there they were, with their little heads bowed, praying by themselves. Isn’t God awesome? It just totally lifted my spirits when I was feeling otherwise miserable.
Please don’t think me crude or crass for continuing to blog as normal; it just makes things seem, well, more normal. I’ll update when there is information to share. In the meantime, we would love if you’d just say a prayer for healing and for strength for all of us. And for my brother Jake, and his fiancee, Dana, who are getting married a month from Wednesday.

Nicole,
You, your mom, and family are in my prayers. I got tears in my eyes when I read about the boys praying. Yes, God is AWESOME! If someone hasn’t told you lately…your a great mom. Kids behavior is usually a direct reflection upon how the parents are raising them. I’m just guessing (because I haven’t met her), but your mom must be pretty amazing as well. I will keep her in my thoughts.
Niki
I will keep your mom and your whole family in prayer.
You all will definitely be in my prayers; today as discoveries and decisions are made, tomorrow as her treatment begins, and for ongoing healing, strength and peace for all of you in the next few days/weeks of the unknown.
Nicole, I can’t begin to image what you are going through. Know that you & the entire family are being prayer for through out the day & the days to come.
Oh and don’t hesitate to ask for help
You can be assured that Sharon and I have been and will continue to be in constant prayer for your mother and entire family. Our church at Calvary has been doing so also for some time now, and we will update everyone tomorrow night to enable them to pray more specifically for the current needs. Words are difficult and seem so shallow during difficult times like this, but we want all of you to know that we love you guys, and more importantly, God does. May His grace and love sustain you as we truly pray for a miracle in your mother’s life. Thinking and praying for you!
Nicole,
We’re praying for you and for your family. If you need anything, please call. The boys are welcome to come play anytime if you need some time to process or get things done. Love you!
Nicole, I’ll be praying for your mom. I’m sorry such a trial has hit your family.
I’m praying for you daily. I fervently believe that prayer accomplishes great things, but if you need a more immediate form of help, please call! I’d be happy to show love in any way I can!!

The image in my mind of your boys praying was enough to bring tears to my eyes. I am thinking of your mom and what you are emotionally going through and I will pray for all of you.
Nicole, you and your family are in my prayers. I know the boys will keep your spirits up. Kids do that….and reading about your kids, I know that it sounds like it’s always one funny heartwarming thing after another!
