Re: Salmonella and Tomatoes

Wow, the whole salmonella/tomato thing hit WAAAY too close to home tonight for me. No, I didn’t get food poisoning, but I did order takeout from California Pizza Kitchen, and the Tostada pizza on honey-wheat? It’s just not the same without the fresh salsa. USDA or whoever you are, can you please figure this thing out quickly? I’d really appreciate it. I treated myself to this dinner tonight because Matt had a late meeting after work, it was kind of a rough day, and I planned to mow the lawn after the kids went to bed and wanted a treat to look forward to. That makes me sound like a dog, but whatever.

Me mowing the lawn was not completely altruistic. For starters, I do actually like to mow. And, Matt’s birthday is coming up, so I thought that would be a nice little bonus gift. But, I also want to get my hair cut tomorrow night, and there wouldn’t be time for me to go see Olivia for that and for him to mow, so I did it. Um, only I started at exactly 8:26, which gave me not much daylight. So the yard is technically 3/4 of the way mowed. I was hitting too many branches in the dark to be safe anymore so I called it quits. Huge thanks to my dad for reminding me that the skeeters would be out, so I wore Off and didn’t get any bites. My annual over-reaction to West Nile Virus has not kicked in yet this year, so I would have probably forgotten had I not talked to him earlier. Oh, and since most of you don’t actually see our yard, we are THOSE neighbors. The ones you secretly love, because their lawn is so much more hideous than yours. I’m seriously putting “regrading the front yard and having sod put down” on my birthday list this summer. Matt, I realize that this is a bit beyond what we usually spend on each other for birthdays, but it will add to the resale value eventually.

In other news today:
:: By 10:30am, I had maxed out all discipline methods I knew to use with Bennett. He had a horrendous morning. The afternoon was better after his nap, but dang. I don’t know what his deal was this morning but it was bad.
:: I caught Jack Henry doing this no less than 5 times today. I would move the bag if I cared that he got into it. If you like the bag, go to Bags By Jill. She’s a classmate of Matt’s and she does great work. I have the “Blake.”

:: Tonight, I experienced one of those huge adrenaline-rush moments, the kind that assures me that if necessary, I could lift a car off of my child. I heard Luke’s very panicked voice calling for me as I was walking down the hall, so I dropped what I was carrying and ran to find him. His head was stuck underneath the entertainment center! He and Bennett had their flashlights out, looking at a toy that had gotten thrown under there today, and Luke couldn’t quite reach it with his arm. So he put his head under too, which worked because he stuck it in at the largest part. Only by the time he reached his toy and was ready to come back out, he had moved to the left enough that the opening where he was located was considerably smaller. I moved him over to where the opening was larger but it was still going to be too hard to get him out. So I started coaching him, “OK, I’m going to lift this, and you have to move when I say it’s time!” I was able to lift the table, which is holding a large television, an inch max off the ground so that he could get out. My hands were killing me when I was done.

All in a day’s work, I guess, right?

  1. Yeah, I bought tomatoes from home so I’m covered there. . . I don’t eat out that often, but I definitely didn’t get my normal buffalo tender wrap at BW3 last night because I would miss the tomatoes. :(

Your post is cracking me up with your annual over-reaction to west nile virus. Ha! I’m glad you’re bite free!

  2. You’ll have to see the pic of Jack Henry playing w/ the contents of your diaper bag one day last wkend (obviously, I didn’t see him start digging in it), only instead of playing w/ a diaper like in your pic, he had 2 plastic bags out. Fortunately, he was more interested in the empty milk bottle he found.

The story about Luke’s stuck head!! (At first, I thought you meant that Jack got his head caught and had just used the wrong name!) Poor Luke! I’ll bet Bennett was all eyes!

  3. Thanks for reminding me of that, Jo! I totally forgot the sunscreen was in there in a bag (it was just in there for the trip to Eff.). He’s been more interested in the bottle and diapers, so I hadn’t even noticed! What a great mom I am.

  4. have you ever tried the bug repellent that is a wipe? i used them last year and they’re great. i just bought them again yesterday b/c eric and kenny are going camping on saturday.
