Good Things Happen on Friday the 13th

I know many normally-sane people get freaked out by Friday the 13th, but I personally love it. My main reason? I became a mom on a Friday the 13th…Lucas Jacob was born Friday, Dec. 13. I never had any superstitions about it before then, but now, I just love when they roll around. Reminds me of that nasty, rainy/snowy day that he came into our lives.

Speaking of Luke, something fun happened this week with him. Heather told me about the BOB books, so I ordered the first set of them online for him, and they arrived yesterday (I bought mine new on ebay, of course, and saved several dollars off the retail price listed). And oh my goodness, the kid is really reading! These are very easy books, designed to introduce consonants one at a time with very simple, repetitive words. I almost cried when he finished book after book, just beaming with pride that he could read the whole thing. Up until now, though he’s pretty interested in reading and reads a few words in bigger books, he wasn’t very good at sounding out words himself. Somehow with these, he’s making huge progress. Now I want the whole set. I did it. I just ordered the whole darn thing on Amazon. It’s an investment, right?

It’s so fun to see him excited about reading! Bennett is super-annoying (he’s not trying to be, so it’s actually kind of cute) while Luke reads these, as he mimics the sounds Luke is making while sounding out words. I know it will be helpful for Bennett to hear how Luke does this, but if I was Luke, I’d want him far away from me while I was reading. So far, he’s not annoyed, so I guess I shouldn’t be either.

  1. I was born on a Friday the 13th so I’m rather fond of it. :)

One of the little girls that Jessica babysits recently acquired the Bob books. She, too, is making huge progress and feels so good about that accomplishment! I know of many homeschoolers that love the Bob books for their littles.

  2. Glad Luke likes the books! We have gotten them from the library, but I may need to just order some instead.

  3. i hadn’t heard of those . i’ll have to try them with kenny when he’s ready. i love when you hear about things that actually work and aren’t a waste of money.
