Several times a summer, we take one or more of the boys to a Cardinals baseball game, and in a few days, we’ll be going again. We all love being at the ballpark. And the game is only a small part of the attraction…the food gets the rest of my the boys’ attention. They’re always excited about the prospect of eating pretzels and nachos and drinking Sprite while at the ballpark, and we always get some kind of unhealthy food. It’s part of the experience, and we generally have a decent diet, so I don’t worry about it.
But, what I’ve been doing for the last couple of years is slicing up an apple or two before we leave the house, and having the boys eat them in the car on the way to the game. The purpose of this is twofold: obviously, to get some fruit in their bellies before all of the junk; and secondly, by eating on the way downtown, they get partially filled up, thus not necessitating an immediate trip to the concession stand. Which usually buys us an inning or two more of the game, because, unlike a lot of girls, I actually like to watch a baseball game.
Anyway, this works for us, and it might for you, too, so I thought I’d share. More WFMW here, where ironically, she’s also talking about eating in the car.

Good idea!!!
great idea!! gets them more fruit… and curbs the need to get food right away. genius.
Great idea! This would work for a lot of different outings too!
Similar to not going grocery shopping hungry!
I love the apple idea! Since I like to watch the game too, I buy a bag a peanuts at the grocery store and bring them with. While the boys don’t always like to eat the peanuts, they do like to break them open. This year I have also bought the Cardinals animal type crackers. I found them at Schnucks. We haven’t taken them yet, but I hope it will allow us to stay in the seats a little longer!
On the other end of the spectrum completely – we completely screwed up and bought our kids cotton candy once at a game and now that is what baseball is about. We have a minor league (Tigers feeder team) in town, so the seats are really inexpensive and it’s fun. The name of the ballpark is “5/3 (Fifth Third) and this year they have a 5/3 burger – it’s like a HUGE hamburger, it’s $20, comes in a pizza box and has 5000 calories. So gross.
