One of the first posts I ever wrote on my blog was about how pumpkin carving started mysteriously falling under my responsibility. In my house growing up, my dad took care of this, so I assumed that Matt would be the one pulling guts out of pumpkins, but noooo. The last three years I’ve done it myself with the boys. Looking into ways to transfer this responsibility next year…
Since we’re all home cooped up together again today*, I thought we might as well get the pumpkins carved! For some strange reason, I initially thought it’d be fun to carve 3 of them. Heck no. It took much longer than anticipated (and much longer than the two older boys’ attention spans would allow) to do the two that they had chosen, and I had even drawn the designs on last night!
Here are our masterpieces and some pictures of the process. I’ve carved or helped carve a lot of pumpkins in my life, and these were by far the strangest ever…the fruit along the walls was just a totally different texture than before, and it made it very hard to clean out from behind our designs, so I just stopped trying.
- ready to start!
- the boys hard at work. for about five minutes.
- did i forget to mention that the boys took the rest of these pictures?
- they liked watching the inside of the pumpkin while i carved…
- this is apparently really cool, because it’s not the last time you’ll see it.
- this was the design luke chose.
- bennett has the camera now. look at his little toes.
- see? isn’t it all kinds of awesome again?
- halfway done…
- really, really cool when you’re a little boy.
- well of course! who doesn’t have a picture of their own phone? i was texting with my brother jake while we were doing this!
- the finished product! i’m giving myself a gold star.
- please check out the playroom behind him. guess what he did while we were carving pumpkins?
*Everyone is really feeling pretty good…a couple of us have sinus headaches, but really, that’s it besides a minor cold. However, Luke’s fever continues to return at night…it’s still very low, but not gone. This is really getting frustrating, and my cabin fever is building.

Very Cool! I like the non-face pumpkins. However, according to Will, that is not a true jack-o-lantern. Doing it on the floor – that is a good idea. However, the little bit of pumpkin guts Milo got a hold of made him sick, so that doesn’t seem to be an option for us.
i am stuck with the carving duties as well as my husband grew up in a household where halloween was considered the devil’s holiday (don’t ask), so he has never really carved a pumpkin in his life…or at least this is what he tells me which may be to get out of doing it (hmmm, must confront him on this).
your carvings turned out great!
hope luke’s fever breaks soon so you can get out of the house. cabin fever can be very frustrating.
Yay for a mom who lets the boys do the photo-journalism! It sure adds a new perspective to the process.
JH with a pirate eye patch is just too cute for words!!
And yes, you truly earned that gold star!
My dad was the one who always did the pumpkin carving with me and my sister so I just figured that Cory would take on that responsibility as well. WRONG, he doesn’t like doing it at all, however, I stood my ground the last couple of years and he HAS done the carving with the girls. This is special daddy/daughter time while I stand in the sidelines with the camera.
Your pumpkins turned out great! Glad to hear you all are on the mends!
Hmm–I guess Ron helped the kids w/ carving pumpkins cause I have no recollection of doing it! It bothers me that I have forgotten so much!
You deserve a big award!! Cute j-o-l’s!
I’m surprised JH wasn’t right in the middle of things! Cutest pirate I’ve ever seen!
So fun, and cute pictures!! I loved carving pumpkins as a kid!! Also, loving JH’s shirt!!
same w/ us – my dad did the carving when we were little and some how i became the carver in our family. i love that my dad did it this year for my boys.
you did a great job!
So, I won’t share pix of our carvings – a couple triangles & some crooked lines. I’m not letting my kids see these – I don’t want them getting any ideas.
Great job!
Very cute pumpkins! Definitely earned your gold star!!
So glad everyone is starting to get better. Cabin fever is the worst. Hope you get to go out soon!
My heart goes out to you. I don’t do pumpkins. PERIOD. Ick. Matt did pick some up from Dierbergs Monday (due to our unending illness and Reagan’s canceled pumpkin patch field trip we never got our to “pick” them). Hopefully we’ll get ours carved by Sat. Last year we let the kids design their faces. I think we’ll do it again. I loved how they turned out! Though looking at yours I thinks those rock too!! Choices, choices.
Got behind again and am catching up. What intricate pumpkin carving! I’ve had the “fun” of carving with Elena and Mark the past few years, mainly because we pick them up after school and that is the best time to do it. I let them draw their own faces and then I do the cutting. Getting more creative each year though this year Mark decided to copy his costume face on the pumpkin — “Scream”.
Am so sorry you’ve had to deal with H1N1, colds, etc. etc. and reading along to Halloween, it appears you all have gotten through it ok.
Love you all!
