My Thanks to Bennett…

…for practically writing this post for me yesterday while the two of us spent some time together. I know that this is probably funnier to me because 1) I was there to hear him say it in his cute voice and 2) he’s my kid, and things that your own kids do is always [...]

My Boy

Bennett has been sick since Saturday around noon, when he excused himself from the lunch table and promptly put himself in bed for a 3 hour nap (all while I was away at my conference).  This is unprecedented, so Matt knew something was wrong.  We’ve had up and down times, but for the last two [...]

Is This Normal?

If you have all girls, you are probably going to think I’m raising wolves.  If you have boys, my hope is that you’ll affirm that this is not atypical.
I sent Bennett back to use the bathroom this morning while I got his breakfast ready.  The following exchange happened when he returned:
Bennett: MOM!  When I peed, [...]

Helpful Advice

Today was a crazy-busy day…I’m just feeling overwhelmed and stretched a bit thin, and I was trying to do too much this morning, which resulted in a hurried lunch for me. While eating their lunch, Luke and Bennett had this little conversation:
Luke: Mom, it would be good if you were Hammy (the psychotic, caffeinated [...]

The First, But Certainly Not the Last

Yesterday, Bennett made me cry. He does this more often than he realizes, but yesterday? I cried right in front of him. He’d thrown a big fit right before naptime, and he told me that he wanted a different mom.
I know, I know, he’s only 3. He doesn’t know how much [...]

BORING

This conversation just happened in our van on the way from my parents’ house to Matt’s parents’ house.
Luke: Bennett?
Bennett: What?
L: Nothing.
B: Luke?
L: What?
B: Nothing.
Repeat for five minutes.
Their dad taught them this.  Sometimes, Bennett likes to do this to me.

Shake Your Booty

How these words made it into my house I’ll never know (I fear that I once said it). But they did, and they are used repeatedly. Because they sound funny. Just try to say “shake your booty” without smiling. See? You can’t do it.
Yesterday Bennett was saying this at the [...]

Don’t Call Me That

Luke (calling whining to me from downstairs): Mom, Ben just called me a name!
Me: Well, what did he call you?
Luke: Dan.
Me: Dan?
Luke: Yeah, Dan.
Me: Well, that’s not a bad word or anything.
Luke: But he wasn’t being nice.
Me: Bennett, don’t call people Dan anymore. They don’t like it.
Moral of the story: Anything can be offensive [...]

A Conversation Between Brothers

Luke: Bennett, what did you do today while I was at school?  (while he loves school, he’s always afraid that he missed something great)
Bennett: I went poop on the potty!  (he does this several times a day now, so it’s really not news anymore)
Luke: Did you do anything else?
Bennett: Ummmm, I did a puzzle, too.
I’m guessing [...]

Yet Another Conversation with Bennett

Bennett, who, again, is supposed to be napping, called me back to his room for the umpteenth time and we had this conversation:
Bennett: (with a slight smile on his face) My tummy hurts.
Me: (totally concerned) It does?  Do you need to use the bathroom?
Bennett: No.
Me:  Do you have to throw up?
Bennett: (stares at me, as [...]
