Laguna Beach, Part 1

As I mentioned a couple of months ago, my superstar husband won an award through work that allowed us to take an all-expenses-paid trip to The Montage at Laguna Beach. This was by far the nicest place we’ve ever stayed and unless Matt can manage to pull off winning this award again (not that I doubt his abilities, but it’s not easy to accomplish), we won’t be seeing the likes of The Montage any time in the future.

In an effort to remember what a glorious trip this was, I’m going to try to blog by day (it’ll be 3 posts all together – one of them is just a funny story and not a trip recap) and use full-sized pictures instead of a gallery, as the pictures really tell the story. (Sorry to facebook peeps, as much of this will be a repeat, but with more details.)

On Monday morning our flight left Lambert at 7:30, so we got an early start to our day. After making it through an impossibly-slow security line, we grabbed some breakfast at Burger King (not delicious, but have you BEEN to the St. Louis airport at the crack of dawn? Not many choices. Step it up, STL.).

this is what happens when two parents of young children arrive at a fast food table separately. 12 napkins.

Easy flight to Dallas, decent flight to Orange County, and a short bus ride and we arrived at the most beautiful place I think I’ve ever been. We knew we were somewhere amazing when a guy in a jacket escorted each couple from the lobby/front desk to their room (every room in the place has a view of the ocean). That and when we realized that the staff steps aside in the hallway or on the sidewalk when a guest walks past. Sheesh.

Here’s a series of room pictures:

seriously the most amazing bed i've ever slept in. it's specially-made for the hotel by sealy and topped with a feather bed. i'd instantly fall asleep when my head hit the pillow!

this bathroom was unbelievable.

orchids in every guest room!

thinking that there is no way i am willingly ever leaving this place.

Monday consisted of us registering with the people running the show, spending some time hanging out with friends poolside, a nap, and then the welcome reception on the Ocean Lawn. I was needing to pinch myself regularly this night.

me and ali (matt's coworker's wife) where we planted ourselves all night...under the heat lamp. it was so cold.

we're really here!

Tuesday we woke up pretty early, but it was fine: breakfast on the lawn awaited us (this dining-on-the-lawn was special for our group; if you stayed at the Montage this is not a regular part of the stay)! The staff was well-trained in shooing the birds away from our tables. That was one thing I didn’t like: the birds. They are brazen. And I hate birds.

After breakfast, we went for a walk on the beach, seen here:

about 30 seconds before my purse and flip flops came dangerously close to washing into the ocean.

Ok…I’m gonna have to end it there for today. We spent the rest of Tuesday going into downtown Laguna Beach to shop a bit, laid around by the pool, and took naps. Tuesday night, which was our big formal event, will start the next post.

  1. Wow. I think I would have SLEPT in that bathroom and been fine with it! More more I want more!

  2. after reading this, i have a strong urge for a strawberry daquiri. beautiful, absolutely beautiful.

  3. I would seriously not know how to act at a place like this! (And will never get a chance to find out.) I’ll just live vicariously through my kids’ travels!

  4. It looks SO awesome there!!

  5. I love Launa Beach! We got to go on a work trip for me a few years ago, and stayed at the Surf and Sand Resort. Our balcony doors opened right above the sand- sometimes I go back and watch a few videos we took of Moses just to hear the glorious sound of the waves! Your posts are making me want to go back! But like you, we won’t be doing that unless it gets paid for again… Maybe I will have to settle for Lake Michigan. HA!

  6. Isn’t it amazing how beautiful people look when they are on vacation? I see it written all over our faces on our honey moon and I see it in these pics of you guys! What a heavenly place! The water is so gorgeous. I keep saying to myself, “that’s California?”. It looks like hawaii! (Or what I envision Hawaii looking like anyway.) Glad you guys had fun and can’t wait to see and hear more! (You look great in yellow BTW)

  7. We won one of those trips several years ago (back when we only had one kid – hard to remember those days). Lee’s company sent us to Miami where we slept in the most amazing bed I’ve ever had to privilege of sleeping in. Seriously, Lee got up early one morning and went golfing. I stayed in bed, with the balcony door open listening to the waves and eating strawberries from room service until 11:00. It was the most glorious morning of my existence. There is very little to complain about being pampered for free. Sans kids… So glad you guys had fun.

  8. yeah.for.you! this makes me want to plan a trip in the worst way. seriously, you can’t help but to smile when you see the smile on your face.
